Honduras

Last week I watched another country's political situation for the first time in my life. I waited, watched and wondered for Honduras. I continue to do so. Please hear me out.

I have an online "friend" I keep up with who is a missionary there (Hayes Zoo en Honduras on my missionary blog list). Through her posts, which led to other online sources, I rooted for the Constitution of another country to be upheld.

I have been dismayed by America's reaction. Or, should I say, American leaders' and newspapers' reaction. Obama and Clinton have issued statements that Zeleya be reinstated as president and are threatenening embargos and such. It makes my heart and jaw drop. Let me explain.

Honduras has a constitution. It sets term limits for presidents (good idea, no?). Zelaya spent a lot of money and time setting up a referendum for the people to vote to allow the constitution to be changed (aka: giving him an open checkbook). An illegal step to take. He would not back down. The congress and the courts warned him that he would be arrested if he insisted on the 'vote' (touted as a democratic activity, when actually it was taking things outside of the legally set action). He kept on. Supported, of course, by Venezuela's leader, Chavez (check him out if you think he really wants to help the people of Honduras). Hondurans do not want to become Venezuelas or Cubans. They have a constitution they want upheld. It protects them.

So... last Sunday came, Zelaya persisted and he was arrested and sent out of the country. The people celebrated and leaders elsewhere condemned. And partial truths hit the airwaves. Please read this blog for lots of stunning information (in contrast, Hondurans call CNN Chaves News Network) that makes me sad and gives me goosebumps: http://lagringasblogicito.blogspot.com/

It scares me for Honduras.
It scares me for little countries who have little money.
Honestly, it scares me for our country.

The day after I celebrated America's independence, I sit here wondering if Honduras has a chance for such a thing.

Who should be scared when the truth is hidden?
Who should be scared when leaders believe that they are above the law?

Who will pray for Honduras?
